Welcome to the memorial page for

John Louis Moseley

September 3, 1932 ~ October 6, 2014 (age 82) 82 Years Old

John was born September 3, 1932, in Cherokee, AL, to Sallie and John McNeil Moseley. He graduated from Florence State Teachers College with a B.S. in Math and Chemistry. In 1954, he married Shirley Cheyne of Yakima, WA. John enlisted in the Naval Reserves at age 17, and was soon selected for the Reserve Officer Corps.  Upon completion of ROC School, he served with distinction on Active Duty for two years.  John loved the sea, but ultimately decided to leave active duty service to raise a family.  His loyalty to his country, however, remained stronger than ever, and so he volunteered to serve in the Naval Reserves, where he was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserves in the North Alabama area. He retired from the Navy after a total of 26 years of service, having reached the rank of Commander. In addition to his military service, John worked for Reynolds Metals Company for 40 years as a Metallurgist. He was a longtime member of Barton’s First Baptist Church.

John loved his family and spending time at the lake with a lengthy roster of beloved cats and dogs, who are no doubt celebrating his arrival in heaven. An avid sports fan, he relished watching the Crimson Tide play football and basketball games with his family. John enjoyed working in his yard, and was a computer expert—often helping others fix their computer issues free of charge.  An avid genealogist, he served as the family’s historian, and enjoyed filling in the gaps for future generations to come. This year, John celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with Shirley. The last seven years of John’s life were spent battling Pulmonary Fibrosis, a disease with a maximum five-year life expectancy, so John was thrilled that God gave him the strength and ability to beat the odds and spend more time with his loved ones.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, Frank Moseley, Merrill Heard, and William Heard; and sisters, Celeste Alexander Barnes and Katie Vivian Gravitte. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; his son, John Moseley Jr. and his wife, Rhonda; his daughter, Leah Kilburn; his daughter, Molly Beck and her husband, Mike; his daughter, Sara Moseley; his brother, Joe Heard; his nephews, David Heard, Thomas (Tommy) Heard, Mike Heard, and Mark Heard; and grandchildren, Roger Kilburn, Jennifer Moseley, Ashley Migliaccio, Sylvia Kilburn, Gabrielle Beck and Hunter Beck.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Webb and the staff at Glenwood for their compassionate care, as well as John’s longtime friend and pulmonologist, Dr. Felix Morris, who provided exceptional care and concern for John throughout his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to John’s favorite charity: Wounded Warrior Project; P.O. BOX 758517; Topeka, KS 66675.
