Wilma Beryl Huffaker (Moore), 94, of Florence passed away at her home August 1, 2023, following a lengthy illness. Her memorial service will be Monday, August 7, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Church of Christ with Brad McKinnon and family members officiating. The visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church. She was born near Grove, Oklahoma on November 6, 1928, the eldest child of David Herman and Elsie Lila Keirsey Moore.
Her beloved brother Charles and sister Carolyn followed. Wilma’s faith became the cornerstone of her life at an early age, and her greatest desire in this life was for her children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends come to know Jesus in the deeply intimate way that she did. She met Robert Eugene Huffaker in the Fall of 1943 and they married on Christmas Eve in 1946. Robert was stationed at Camp Stoneman in California, however they returned to the Grove area in the summer of 1947 to begin farming. Stephen Douglas was born in February 1949, followed by Stanley Brent in 1951. Though Robert loved farming, he was called to go and preach while plowing a field in 1954. They moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma where Robert worked nights and attended Central Christian College. In 1956 the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Robert attended David Lipscomb College and Wilma worked as a secretary for Dr. Willard Collins, the President of David Lipscomb. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Robert attended George Peabody and received a Master’s in Teaching. While living in Nashville, Robert and Wilma worked with several area churches. After preaching in Cornersville, Tennessee for two years before moving to Florence, Alabama to teach at Mars Hill Bible School and preach at the Mt. Zion Church of Christ. Scott Eugene, was born in 1962 and their daughter, Leila Suzette, was born in 1966. Both Robert and Wilma poured themselves into their family, their ministry with the church and Christian education. She became the Administrative Assistant for the Presidents of International Bible College in Florence, however her energy was poured into supporting Robert in his role of preacher and elder.
Wilma was best known for constantly opening their home to those in need, church members and family. She was an excellent cook, and made sure that everyone at her table had one of their favorite dishes. She taught the Ladies Bible Class for decades at Mt. Zion. She was an avid sewer and loved writing, however reading and making notes in her Bible, writing notes of encouragement and making phone calls to those that were experiencing illness or difficulty were her greatest passion. She never missed an important date or a birthday. She never allowed herself or her family to forget that if they were down, there was always someone worse off that needed to be served, and she lived this ideal through her own example.
Wilma is survived by her husband of 76 years, Robert; son Steven (Peggy), Stapleton, AL; son Stanley, Muscle Shoals, AL; son Scott (Tammy), Silver Hill, AL; daughter Suzette (David), Memphis, TN; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, multiple nephews and nieces and beloved members of her church family.
