Sara Elizabeth Booream Doss Obituary

Sara Elizabeth Penney Booream Doss died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 20th.  She was born in Corinth, Mississippi September 3,1925. 

Sara Elizabeth attended Stephens College in St. Louis, Missouri.  During her collegiate years, World War II was very much a part of life and it was while visiting her roommate in Selma, Alabama, that she met her future husband, Howard Christian “Bud” Booream who was stationed at Craig Airfield, Selma, Alabama as an Air Force Flight Instructor.  They were married in 1945 when the war was over and made their home in Corinth, Mississippi where their first two daughters were born. They moved to Florence, Alabama in 1953 for “Bud” to take over the family business.  Their third daughter and only son were born in Florence. Bud died in March, 1992.  Sara Elizabeth married Wilford C. Doss in 2004; He died in 2014.

The First Presbyterian Church of Corinth and Florence were both a very important part of Sara Elizabeth’s life from birth to death.  She served the Women of the Church in different capacities, Circle Leader, WOC Treasurer, Hostess and Decorating Committee and Trustee.  Sara Elizabeth was a past member of Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club, Florence Discussion Club and the Thursday Bridge Club for 55 years.  

Those preceding her in death: Parents, Richard Malvern Penney & Adeline McLemore Penney; Sara Elizabeth’s brother and only sibling, Richard M. Penney, Jr. (Billie); two very special aunts, Josephine Penney and Julia Walker, of Florence; her daughter, Elizabeth Christian “Christy” McCorkle; and Wilford’s daughter, Adrienne Doss Ford. 

She leaves her most precious treasures, “her children”, Penney Griffin , Florence, Cynthia Briand, Fort Myers, Florida, Howard Christian “Chris” Booream (Alicia), Gallatin, Tennessee; and Grandchildren, John Thomas Woodward (Lauren), Fort Myers, Florida, Lauren Wright (Chase), Trussville, Howard Christian “Trey” Booream, III, Florence and Margaret Elizabeth “Maggie” Tays (Hunter), Lexington; Great Grandchildren, Dawson and Sawyer Woodward and Molly and Colin Wright; Niece, Mary Elizabeth Barone (Bob) Bonita Springs, Florida; and Nephew, Richard M. “Rick” Penney, III (Cindy), Sanibel Island, Florida. Sara Elizabeth is also survived by her son-in-law, Brad McCorkle, Florence and Wilford’s son, Dudley Doss (Dana), Sequoima, Washington. 

The family wishes to express their love and appreciation to Sara Elizabeth’s caregivers who have been a blessing to our family for over twelve years, dear friend Melody Pickens, Christina Clements, Gayle Lowery, Sue Grisham, Marsha Burleson, Vera McCarter and many others who have given their time and love to our Mother. A special thank you to Houseman and Groundskeeper, Gene Sheedy.

A private memorial will be held for the family at a later time. The family asks that memorials be directed to First Presbyterian Church, Florence.
