Larry Michael Futrell, 74, better known as Pete Futrell, of Florence, died suddenly Saturday, November 22, 2025, at North Alabama Medical Center.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 26, 2025, from 12:30-2 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Colbert Memorial Gardens.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Johnnie and Maggie Futrell.
Pete is survived by his wife, Donna Melton Futrell; daughter, Wendy Futrell Trousdale (Brian); grandchildren, Heather Trousdale and Marshall Trousdale; and brothers, John Thomas Futrell and James (Bud) Futrell.
Until his retirement, Pete worked for Norfolk Southern Railway 40 years as a locomotive engineer. He was also local chairman of the Brotherhood of Local Engineers (BOLE).
Pete was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time at the beach and the mountains with the whole family.
Pete met 15-year-old Donna when he was 16 at Club Teen a Go-Go. Pete loved to dance and was quite good. They were quickly drawn to each other, getting married four years later.
During their dating years Pete found ways to get a ride to Cherokee to see Donna. He recruited friends, fixing them up with Donna’s friends, which resulted in several marriages.
One of Pete’s most used talents was spinning tall tales. He could make up a ridiculous story about anything. Exaggeration was another skill Pete mastered and frequently demonstrated. To know him was to love him and to laugh until your sides hurt.
Love has many faces and in the past few years, Donna’s health has been in decline, and Pete was wonderful at taking care of her. He cooked, shopped, and doctored her, supporting her when she could not walk or stand.
You may be gone from my sight, but you are never gone from my heart.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Futrell, Lee Morrison, Tony Fortenbery, Marshall Trousdale, Ty Melton, and Tory Melton.
