The Funeral Service for John Melvin Sandy, 88 of Florence will be 2PM, Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Greenview Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12-2PM prior to the service on Saturday. Mark Sandy and Roger Houston will officiate the service. The interment will follow in Greenview Memorial Garden of Valor.

Mr. Sandy passed from this life on October 14, 2023 at his residence. He was born in Mt. Hope Alabama July 7, 1935 to John Melvin and Lucy Campbell Sandy. After spending his childhood in Mount Hope and Tanner Alabama, John served as an MP in the Army and graduated from Auburn University in 1960 with a degree in Dairy Science. While working at the Auburn Experiment Station at Camp Hill John met his future bride and life-long friend Catherine Mae Sherer at a Christmas party in 1961. John and Catherine purchased a dairy in the community of Central Heights near Florence, Alabama in 1965. They would sink their roots deep in the community, raise three children and would enjoy the friendship of many. John served as deacon, Sunday School teacher and treasurer at Central Heights Baptist Church, President of the Alabama Dairy Association, Lauderdale County Co-Op board member, and on the Board of Directors of the Lauderdale County Farmer's Federation. He will be remembered as a godly, loving, generous, hard-working husband, father and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, 3 sisters, and a grandson, Benjamin Monroe Sandy.
Mr. Sandy is survived by his wife, Catherine Mae Sherer Sandy; sons, Will (Rebecca) Sandy of Florence, Alabama; Mark (Sheryle) Sandy of El Dorado, Arkansas; daughter, Debbie (Jay) Plyler of Hoover, Alabama; grandchildren, Jared Plyler, Drew Plyler, Sarah Sandy (Buzz Hardin); Jonathan (Reganne) Sandy, Lucas Sandy; great grandchild, Julien Royal Sandy-Hardin.
Pallbearers will be Jared Plyler, Drew Plyler, Jonathan Sandy, Sarah Sandy, Julien Sandy-Hardin, Lucas Sandy, Jay Plyler, Buzz Hardin.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Trigger Oakley, Herby Harrison, Jim Warren, Men’s Sunday School Class at Central Heights Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank Tami Risner, Nina Cunningham, Karen Sharp, Nisha Coleman and Amy Griffith for blessing John and Catherine with such amazing care, patience and compassion.
