Jimmie "Jim" Murphy Obituary

Jimmie Ray Murphy, 88, of Florence, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2024, at North Alabama Medical Center with family by his side.

Visitation will be Friday, March 29, 2024, from 6-8:00 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be Saturday, March 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Chad Hess officiating.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Murphy; daughters, Nita Anne Bradley, Angela Carrier, and Julie Abbe; father, William Blain Murphy; mother Gladys Murphy Parker; brothers, Robert Murphy and William Murphy; and sister, Barbara Aderholt.

Jimmie is survived by his daughters, Shelia Martz (Randy) and Jamie Mitchell (Billy); son, James Murphy (Kitty); grandchildren, Randy Martz (Seth), Betina Martz, Riley George, McKinsey Holton, Rhiannon Waddel (Drew), and Christina and Autumn Bradley; along with multiple other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 Jimmie was born in Florence, AL, and graduated from Central High School.  He joined the Army in 1955, serving his country as a Communication Security Specialist.  His military career included four tours in Vietnam and two tours in Korea and Panama.  Some of his most prized possessions were the many medals he was awarded, which included two Bronze Stars. Jimmie later returned to his hometown and married his high school sweetheart.  He worked at Browns Ferry and joined the local Painters and Allied Trade Union.

 His greatest loves were his family, helping others, and serving his community.  He joined several organizations including the Cahaba Shriners, Florence Elks Lodge 820, VFW, and more.  He also co-founded Shoals Elks Lodge 2860.  Elkdom always had a special place in his heart which was evident by his involvement.  He served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Alabama State President, Exalted Ruler of Florence and Shoals Lodges, and life member among others.  Jimmie had an amazing influence on our community and state making many lifelong friends.

Jimmie attended Woodmont Baptist Church, where he adored his Sunday School class and listening to Pastor Chad. 

He was his family’s beloved patriarch who guided them with love, wisdom, and tenderness, always quick with a wink and a smile. He was an amazing man whom will be greatly missed by his family and friends throughout Alabama.

Pallbearers will be Billy Mitchell, Randy Martz, Dan Barger, Jim Luncford, Rick Thompson, and Lester Collins.

Honorary pallbearers are Tim Parker, Dr. Felix Morris and Dr. Baron.
