James "Steve" Stephen Cooper

James Stephen “Steve” Cooper, 73, of Florence, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at his residence.  Steve retired from USPS as a rural mail carrier and was a member of Petersville Church of Christ.

Visitation will be Friday, May 30, 2025 from 9-11 a.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in the Greenview Memorial Park. Officiating will be Terry Oakley and Adam Richardson.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, James Maxwell “Mack” and Gladys Young Cooper; and brother, Joe Bennie Cooper (Jane).

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janice Kay “Peggy” Wesson Cooper, Florence; sons, Josh Cooper (Jennifer) and Zack Cooper (Kandi), both of Florence; grandchildren, Emma, Mackenlee, Claire, Bentlee, and Ellie Cooper.

Steve was a member of The Natchez Trace Genealogical Society and Wayne County Historical Society. He was a player/coach for Shoals Merchants and Cooper’s T. V. Men’s Softball teams. He also enjoyed playing pick up basketball at the Cloverdale gym. Later in life, Steve spent many hours helping others do genealogy research at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library. Steve was an avid New York Yankees fan and Alabama Crimson Tide fan.  He loved to fish, go to sprint car races with his brother Joe, and go to ballgames, especially to watch his granddaughters play and cheer.

Pallbearers will be Mike Cooper, Rusty Cooper, Keith Riley, Ricky Young, Cecil Myrick, Jr., and Dennis Smith.

Honorary pallbearers are Johnny Simmons, Dan Richardson, and Donny Young.
