Hollis DeLano Obituary

Hollis DeLano of Florence, AL passed away November 9, 2024, at the age of 89.  Visitation will be held at Greenview Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, 11/15/24 from 12pm-2pm with burial immediately following in Greenview Memorial Park.  Justin Pannell officiating.

Hollis was raised by his grandmother and uncles in the Petersville community. He joined the US Navy at an early age and following training in San Diego, he served as an Electrician’s Mate on the USS Ajax during the Korean Conflict.  Upon returning home, he worked various travelling construction jobs until joining Reynolds Aluminum Company as a crane operator, working until he retired in 1997.  He was a member of Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ and proud member of IBEW Local 558.

As a young man, Hollis enjoyed hunting, camping, dirt bike riding, and amateur radio where he received his HAM license and enjoyed talking to people around the world.  As a young man he studied karate, earning him the nickname of “Chops” that forever stuck with him.

People that knew Hollis recognized immediately that he’d never met a stranger and if you’ve met him once, you knew him for life.  His generosity was understated as he gave freely to those needing help without expectations of return.  He was a loving husband and patriarch to his family and will be sorely missed.

Hollis is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lema Ruth (Sissy) DeLano, daughter, Myra Ledlow (Roger), sons, Tony DeLano, Dean Wood, Joey Wood (Anna), grandson Chris Ledlow (Clara), granddaughters, Brittany Creighton (Jeff), Melissa Dawson, Alexis Fulmer, great-grandsons Aiden Bowles, Sawyer Dawson, Walker Dawson, Joshua Ledlow, and Daniel Ledlow He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Lester DeLano.

Pallbearers will be Elders of Sherrod Avenue, Ed May, Mike Mitchell, Doug Murphy, Paul Newton, Jonathan Snell, and Don Snodgrass.  Honorary pallbearers are Jim Winn, Lloyd Haddock, John McCord, Eddie Stanfield, Robert Jenkins, and Lenis Patterson.

The family would like to extend its gratitude to CenterWell Home Health and Dr. William Heaton for their care and compassion during the trying times.
