Grace Marie Lindsey Obituary

Grace Marie Lindsey of Florence, Alabama passed peacefully from this life on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the age of 97. She was the beloved mother of five children, son Ron Lindsey (Janet) of Hohenwald, TN, daughters Janice Hughes of Florence, Deb Johnson (Craig) of Trussville, Melanie Sharp of Florence, and Vickie Goodman (Malcolm) of Huntsville.

She left a legacy of 13 grandchildren, Ronnie Lindsey (Ximena) of Smyrna, TN, Matt Lindsey (Natasha) of Tuscumbia, Danny Lindsey (Lori) of Killen, Jeff Weitz (Christy) of Killen, Kerri Hobbs of Sheffield, Megan Humphries (Chris) of Vestavia Hills, Amy Reese (Gabe) of Trussville, Jeremy Goss (Shayna) of Muscle Shoals, Miles Goss of Iuka, MS, April Morris (Matt) of Florence, Chelsie Sisson (Paul) of Rogersville, Karson Goodman (Annie) of Birmingham, and Harper Goodman of Denver, CO, 22 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.

She is survived by one brother, Don Cochran of Florence, one sister-in-law, Sophia Cochran, of New Braunfels, TX., numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Oliver Lindsey, her parents William Arthur and Myrtle Cochran, five brothers, W.A. Cochran, Jr., George Cochran, Morris Cochran, and Homer Cochran, two sisters, Sarah Hill,  Faye Mason, and son in law, Tom Hughes.

Grace was born on June 11, 1928, in Cherokee, AL, but spent most of her life in Florence. She was the eldest of 8 children, growing up on a farm where she was kept busy with farm chores and helping take care of her younger siblings. She has now outlived all but one of her brothers.

She graduated from Central High School and soon after married her husband Oliver, who she affectionately called Sonny. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, helping in her children’s schools, helping lead Scout troops, making beautiful dresses for her daughters, helping her neighbors, attending church, and working at the polls for decades.

One of her greatest joys was photographing her children and grandchildren and lovingly arranging them in albums to show to everyone who visited. She is known for her delicious chicken stew, dressing, and salmon patties, which her children and grandchildren occasionally try to imitate. For years, she would rise early to make homemade biscuits from scratch to go with the full breakfasts she made for her family. When Grace’s husband died in 1989, she finally learned to drive and to swim at age 60, thanks to her friend Lois.

It’s not easy to capture a life that spanned 97 years and seven months. Most importantly, hers was a life of deep love and commitment to family. In her later years, she helped raise her granddaughters April and Chelsie, who lovingly helped care for her as she grew older. In Grace’s last years in her home, Chelsie’s daughter Scarlet captured her “Baga’s” heart.

She lived in her home on Pine Street in Florence until she was 91 and then moved to Brookdale Assisted Living in Muscle Shoals. Grace’s family would like to express much gratitude to Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home in Killen for the wonderful care they provided to her for the last four years of her life and especially for the hospitality and love they showed her and her family during the last week of her life.

Grace’s celebration of life will be held at Greenview Funeral Home Chapel in Florence on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:30, followed by the service at 2:30 PM. Grandson Jeremy Goss will officiate. Burial will then be at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church graveyard.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Ronnie Lindsey, Matt Lindsey, Danny Lindsey, Jeff Weitz, Karson Goodman and Landon Hobbs. Friends and family are invited to attend.
