Gail Garrett Obituary

 Gail Garrett

Gail Garrett, aged 84, passed away on September 6, 2025, after a courageous, prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on June 14, 1941, to Hugh and Ruby Duncan (both deceased), Gail was preceded in death by her brothers Jack, Tommy, and Jimmy Duncan, and sister Judy Davis. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 65 years, Larry Garrett, her sister Linda Neidert (Carl), her sons Jeffrey Garrett (Pennye), David Garrett (Jeannie), and Roger Garrett (Angi). Her grandchildren Phillip Garrett (Allison), Daniel Garrett, Gracie Garrett (Jennifer King), Julia Chmura (Eli) and Ava Garrett. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Tucker Garrett, Maddux Garrett, and Oakley Garrett-King, all of Florence, AL, except for Gracie, Jennifer and Oakley, who reside in Asheville, NC.

Gail married Larry Garrett on June 5, 1960, just days before her 19th birthday, beginning a love story that lasted over 65 years. For the first two decades of their marriage, she was a homemaker, devotedly caring for her husband and sons. During an era when the "hippy" look dominated teenage fashion, she ensured her boys were clean, neat, and well-groomed. Gail was an exceptional cook and a skilled seamstress. She also contributed to the family farm, working in the hayfields and even assisting in delivering calves from cows in distress. When her youngest son, Roger, was in high school, she began a 25-year career with the U.S. Postal Service as Postmaster of Cloverdale, where she took pride in meeting and serving the citizens of the community.

A dedicated member of Crosspoint Church of Christ, Gail participated in weekly Bible study at Earl and Suzanne Gardner’s barn for as long as her health permitted. She served on the original Board of Directors for the Cloverdale Volunteer Fire Department and helped prepare monthly breakfasts at the Cloverdale Community Center. Gail loved the outdoors, particularly camping, canoeing, and rafting trips with her close friends B.G. and Brenda Staggs. A loyal Atlanta Braves fan, she was disappointed when her favorite player, Freddie Freeman, signed with the Dodgers and moved to the West Coast. She enjoyed playing cards with her husband, sisters-in-law Elaine Holt and Sharon South, Sharon’s husband, Charlie, and their daughter, Amanda. Remarkably, even as dementia affected her comprehension, Gail continued to win most of their Phase 10 games.

Her family was her greatest passion, and she cherished hosting holidays, birthdays, and special occasions at home. Her true joy came from taking the entire family on vacations to the beach, mountains, and on Caribbean cruises.  On those cruses she particularly enjoyed the ice cream and quarter machines. Gail was a remarkable woman who will be deeply missed

Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 2 PM Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at the Cloverdale Church of Christ. Funeral service to follow with Bro. Ted Vafeas officiating.  Private burial will be at the adjacent cemetery with Greenview Funeral Home directing.
