Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Park in Florence.
Elisabeth Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph C Thomas; parents, Andrew and Verdie Lee Johnson; sister, Genevieve Woodard; and brother, Dr. Myron Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Gahan (John) of Williamsburg, Virginia; granddaughter, Becca Brown (David) of Salmtal Germany; grandson John Gahan III (Rachel) of Birmingham, Alabama; grandson David Gahan (Kayla) of Mobile, Alabama; and sister, Miriam Carnes.
Elisabeth Thomas earned her B.A. degree in education from Asbury College in 1957. She taught English in High School in Nicholasville, Kentucky and moved to Florence with her husband Dr. Joseph C Thomas in 1961 as he began a distinguished career at UNA. In Florence, Elisabeth continued her teaching career teaching 7th grade English at Forest Hills School. From there she moved to First United Methodist Church teaching in the weekday children’s program (2 yr olds). For over 55 years, Elisabeth was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Florence, serving on countless committees and in the UMW. Elisabeth, like Joe, was a devoted UNA supporter and could be seen at his side at every possible function they could attend including basketball and football games and concerts. She also enjoyed entertaining the science department faculty, and all new applicants to the School of Arts and Sciences. Elisabeth loved boating and skiing with family on the Tennessee River. Just one of her favorite scriptures was Psalms 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Special thanks go out to the many devoted caregivers who have been by her side, especially Wanda Shanes and Vera Thompson. Special thanks also to Shea Eubanks and Aisha McCoy of Affinity Hospice for the skillful and personal care they provided.
For those who wish to make a donation in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Joseph and Elisabeth Thomas Endowed Chemistry Scholarship at UNA. Donations can be sent to: The UNA Foundation, UNA Box 5113, Florence, AL 35632.
