Earl Frank Evans, 92, of Muscle Shoals, AL, passed away on July 24, 2023 with his family by his side.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 30, 2023 from 12-2 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Tuscumbia Oakwood Cemetery.
Earl was born on January 21, 1931 in Hackleburg, AL. He was a caring child who assisted his mother in operating a telephone switchboard for Alabama Telephone Company. Also, during the summer months he would ride by bus to south Alabama to work and help his grandparents.
When he was 12 years old a tornado hit Hackleburg and destroyed their home. His parents searched for him, calling out his name. He crawled out from under the brick chimney rubble with his pj’s nearly torn off and nail holes in his feet; but he survived.
His family then moved to Sheffield. Earl had part-time jobs during his school years and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1948.
Earl was called to serve in the Korean War. He served two years at sea followed by four years active duty at Naval Reserve offices. He completed his 20 years in the Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer, U.S. Naval Reserve and was retired on January 21, 1991.
His first job at the Tennessee Valley Authority was in accounting. He progressed through several positions with increasing authority to serve as Branch Chief of the Chemical Accounting Branch at TVA. During his tenure, he oversaw automation of bookkeeping, and inventory storage management and other systems.
Upon retirement from TVA, Earl accepted a position as Professor of Accounting at the University of North Alabama. He later ran the accounting internship program at UNA.
Earl was on the Board of Directors at TVA Credit Union and was a past president of the Valley Wide TVA Retiree Association.
Earl approached all his endeavors with passion and enthusiasm. He always led with honesty and integrity. He never met a stranger.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Gray Evans and Raymond Clyde Evans; sister, Reba June Evans; and first wife, Betty Sue Freeman Evans.
He was lovingly cared for in his later years by his second wife, Gail Davis Evans, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter, Cindy Evans Verner (Brett); son, Earl Frank Evans, Jr.; and step-daughter, Kim Counts (Price).
Pallbearers will be Price Counts III, Price Counts IV, Davis Whitten, A.J. Ball, Ilya Drogina, and Dustin Fisher.
