Dorris Phillips Obituary

On Sunday, December 9, 2018, Dorris Jean McIntyre Phillips, loving wife and mother of two, passed away at the tender age of 87. Dorris was born on April 14, 1931, in Florence, Alabama to Walton Brown and Lena Belle (Darby) McIntyre.

She graduated from Central High School of Florence and was later employed by the Times-Daily where she served as the Advertising Art Director until 1993.

On October 21, 1950, she married William Turner Phillips, raising a son, William Mitchell Phillips and a daughter, DeAnna Michelle (Phillips) Flippo.

Dorris had a passion for music, serving as Choir Director at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church for over 40 years and also singing with the Shoals Praise & Worship Choir. She was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a volunteer in the Life Wise program at ECM Hospital.

Dorris was exceptionally artistic, her talent extending from her job to her love of painting, especially landscapes.

None of her interests compared to the love she had and showed to her friends and family, especially her grandkids and church family. Dorris had a sassy personality and loved “getting one over” on friends and family.

Dorris was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 beautiful years, William Turner “Bill” Phillips, her father, Brown, and mother, Lena, her siblings Ronald McIntyre, Brown Jr. McIntyre, and Thelma McIntyre Walker, and nephew, Jeff McIntyre.

She is survived by her children, William Mitchell Phillips (Sheryl), DeAnna Phillips Flippo (Don), grandchildren Hunter Flippo, Ben Flippo (Haven), Elliott Khansari (Emily), and Brice Phillips, great grandchildren Ava Khansari and Eli Khansari, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and her granddog and faithful companion, Dobbie.

Dorris spent her last days in the comfort of her home with hands down the best caregivers that ever did the job. She loved each as if they were her own. The family would like to acknowledge and thank VIcki Walden, Pam Blackstock, Marie Grigsby, and Glynda Bonner. We love how you cared for our mother.

Thanks are also extended to her doctor, William Hobbs, who oversaw her care for over 40 years, the staff at The Summit Rehabilitation Center, and the staff of Hospice of the Shoals (especially the “dynamic duo bath ladies”) who kept her comfortable, clean, and dry.

Visitation will be held at Greenview Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 11th from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The funeral service will be held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 12th, at 11:00am with Reverend Ian Butler and Reverend Ricky Smith officiating.  Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
