Donald Bayliss Canaday, born on November 19, 1930, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Don was born in Memphis and moved to Florence as a child. He served in the US Naval Reserve and was called to active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War.
In 1953, he married Barbara Wilson and together they raised four children. He worked at Reynolds Metals Company, retiring in 1989 from his position as Manager of Maintenance for the Cast House and Reclamation areas of the plant. He was member of IBEW 558 for over 75 years.
At age 54, Don earned his private pilot license and became actively involved in the Civil Air Patrol. He served as Commander of the Muscle Shoals Squadron for 11 years retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after 24 years’ of service.
Don was a long time member of Underwood Baptist Church, a passionate ham radio operator and loved traveling the country in his motorhome.
Don is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Wilson Canaday; son, Donald Canaday II; his parents, Clarence and Ada Canaday; sister, Jean Holt; and brothers, William L. Canaday and C.E. Canaday.
Don is survived by his dear special friend, Betty McInish; children, Sharon Jordan (Ray), Jan Pflueger (Richard), and Eric Canaday (Kim); daughter-in-law, Candy Blanke Howton; three grandchildren, Courtney Stetzler (Jeff), Rachel Hunter (Lance), and River Canaday; and three great grandchildren, Abbie Stetzler, Parker Stetzler, and Madilyn Hunter.
The Rev. Jerry Phillips will officiate a private graveside service for the family.
