David Glenn Barrett Obituary

David Glenn Barrett, 68, of Florence, Alabama, passed away on November 13, 2025, after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janice, his daughter, Leia (Martin) Powell, and grandson, Patrick Durham.

He started his career at Lauderdale Farms in Florence, and continued through the transition of Jimmy Dean, Rudy’s Farm, Sara Lee, and Hillshire Brands; he worked there 38 years.

An avid fisherman and hunter, he enjoyed those sports with his good friends.  He loved westerns, Alaskan frontier shows, riding 4-wheelers, and was always tinkering on something in his "barn."

He was staunchly devoted to his family.  The youngest son of six, he quickly became the Patriarch, often standing vigil over the sick, and lending a hand any time he could.

He loved to travel and go on adventures, especially with Leia on father/daughter trips; venturing as far as California and Alaska on grand fishing expeditions, escapes to the Tennessee mountains, and Nashville to the Grand Ole Opry.  Gulf Shores was his great escape with his wife, Janice, where they often spent hours on the beach or fishing on the pier.

He never met a stranger, was always friendly and welcoming to people of all walks of life. A patriotic soul, he never hesitated to shake the hand of someone who had served his beloved country.

David was baptized into the Church of Christ as a young man, and blessed his fellow man with a servant heart and his love of animals of all kinds; often venturing to care for neighbors' emus and ducks, along with his own beloved dogs, Bella and Sinclaire, his cats, Henry, Romeo, Charlie Joon, and Jin, and a rooster named Pedro, whom he rescued from the side of the highway.

The family would like to thank the excellent staff of Caring Place of the Shoals, Compassus Hospice of Florence and Birmingham, and UAB St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham for their loving and compassionate care.

Visitation will be at Greenview Funeral Home in Petersville, on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 from 11:00-1:00pm, and Memorial Service to follow officiated by his nephew, Brother Lee Parker, with internment at Tri-cities Memorial Gardens in Florence.

Pallbearers will be Tyron Barrett, Shannon Barrett, Steve Fleming, Billy Smith, Larry Owens, and Nick Specker. Honorary pallbearers will be George Riddle, Ken Risner, Larry Underwood, Wayne Smith, Cavin Riddle, Mark Riddle, and Terrell Wilkerson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to Caring Place of the Shoals or HASRA (Heart of Alabama Save Rescue and Adopt) in Killen.
