Catherine Mae Sherer Sandy passed away on April 29th, 2025. Visitation will be Monday, May 5, 2025 from 12-2 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Mark Sandy officiating. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.
She was born in Oakman, Alabama and grew up in Hamilton, Alabama. She was a retired English teacher from Central High School, a member of Central Heights Baptist Church.
Catherine Sandy was extraordinary in so many ways. She set an example in her care of her husband of 61 years, John Sandy. Her children are thankful for the countless ways that she loved and nurtured. Having a heart of a teacher, Catherine used her gift to help her students at Central High School gain a love for learning. Her children remember how she would always be learning a new craft. From macrame to ceramics, she tried it all. Later in life she focused her attention on creating beautiful quilts for her family and giving many away to be used as charity fundraisers.
The most defining aspect of Catherine’s life is her faith in and love for Christ. Her faith was expressed through the many ways she served. From leading mothers to be to Christ at Shoals Save A Life to organizing Operation Child campaign at Central Heights Baptist Church Catherine used the time she was given to further God’s kingdom.
She is preceded in death by her husband John, parents Ray and Mary Ellen Sherer, siblings Linda Faye Sherer, Clara Ann Stoll, Earl Sherer and grandson Ben Sandy.
She is survived by her children Debbie (Jay) Plyler, Will (Rebecca) Sandy, Mark (Sheryle) Sandy, grandchildren Jared, Drew, Sarah (Buzz), Jonathan (Reganne), Lucas, great grandson Julien, sister Laura Gracie and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the people that gave Catherine such wonderful care: Tami Risner, Amy Griffith, Nina Cunningham, Karen Sharp, Nisha Coleman, Amedisys and Columbia Cottage
