Carl Edward Madewell

Carl Edward Madewell, age 90, of Florence, Alabama, joined his Lord and Savior on June 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service will be held at Woodmont Baptist Church, Florence, AL, on Tuesday, June 17 at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Chad Hess will officiate. The family will receive visitors 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Hodges Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. outside Spencer, TN, on June 18.

Carl was born to Erastis Edward and Annie Lee (McCoy) Madewell on May 11, 1935, in Spencer, TN, where he spent his childhood on a mountain farm. Carl completed high school at Van Buren County High School in 1953. He earned his B.S. Agricultural Education from Tennessee Tech in 1957. He married Dorothy Jean Hollingsworth on August 15, 1958. After serving as a Combat Engineer with the U.S. Army, Carl received an M.S. Agricultural Economics and Marketing from the University of Tennessee and an M.A. Resource Economics from the University of Wisconsin.

Carl spent most of his professional career working for the Tennessee Valley Authority (35 years) office of Agricultural and Chemical Development located in Muscle Shoals, AL. He authored or co-authored over 70 professional reports, publications and books focused on developing new agri-business enterprises and managing businesses in an economic and environmentally sustainable 21st century manner.

Carl valued highly his civic responsibility. He was an active member of the Florence Exchange Club for over 50 years (joined September 1, 1968). He ranked highly his responsibility to God. He was an active member of the Woodmont Baptist Church for over 50 years. He also highly valued family and strived to participate in all annual family reunions. Carl loved to travel with his wife and they visited many locations throughout the world. He loved to fish and hunt deer and turkey in Alabama, moose in Alaska, and elk in Colorado and Canada.

Carl is survived by the pride and joy of his life, his two sons, Alan Edward (Margaret) Madewell and Jared Lee (Nancy) Madewell, his granddaughter Darby Elizabeth Madewell, and several nieces and nephews. He was always there for them for anything they needed. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Dorothy Jean Madewell, his sister Ella Vesta VanWinkle and his brother Virble J.C. Madewell.

Members of the Exchange Club are honorary pall bearers. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Woodmont Baptist Church Building Fund.
