Bobby Haynes Obituary

Bobby Haynes, age 92, born in Sheffield, Al. was a longtime resident of Lake Worth and Stuart, Fl. passed away May 8, 2018.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 3-4 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Park with military honors. Officiating will be Reverend Scott Coats.

He enlisted into the army at 18 and became a member of the 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division. Being a modest man, Bobby would never tell you about his medals or fighting in the famed 10th Mountain Division. They executed what is still regarded as the most daring series of nighttime mountain attacks in US military history under the most treacherous conditions about which books have been written.

Bobby returned home and entered college, married Betty, his lifelong wife for 68 years and had three daughters.

A 70 year member of the IBEW, local 558, Bobby’s career started working for TVA at several steam and fossil power plants as well as dams. He taught safety classes and was an officer of TVA Employees Federal Credit Union.

He became an electrical supervisor for Ebasco Services and worked at nuclear power plants across the US, including St. Lucie I and II in Florida. He highly enjoyed his time in Taiwan while building their first nuclear plant, Jinshan. He developed a love for the people, embraced their culture, and learned Mandarin Chinese.

Bobby was a voracious reader of history, science and space. When Macular Degeneration robbed him of much of his vision, he continued his passion by listening to hundreds of audio books. A Merlin computer enabled him to quench his desire to stay abreast with the changing world and aided him to continue to live independently.

Recently, Bobby said, “I wish I could see all the innovations and discoveries in the year to come that is what I will really miss the most.”

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, daughters, Jo Ann Rice and Terry Haynes.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Haynes Coleman, granddaughters, Casey Coleman, Jennifer Rice Lowe and great-grandson, Skyler Phillips-Lowe.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bobby’s memory may be made to Blind Rehabilitation (WPBVA Medical Center, VAMC’s BRC) or The Tenth Mountain Division Foundation.
