The Funeral Service for Barbara Emily Cosby Smith, 73, of Florence, Alabama, will be at 2 PM, Wednesday, October 9, at St. John Methodist Church, Florence, AL. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM prior to the service. Rev. Gary Cosby & Rev. David Allison will officiate the service. The interment will be in Florence City Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born in Murfreesboro, TN, April 6, 1951, to Samuel Franklin and Julia Elizabeth Forsythe Cosby. She was an active member at St. John Methodist Church in Florence, where she served as the organist and sang in the choir for many years. She especially enjoyed cooking, working with her many plants outdoors, watching Alabama Football games, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Barbara also enjoyed playing tennis for many years.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her father, Samuel Franklin Cosby; mother, Julia Elizabeth Forsythe.
She is survived by her husband, Samuel “Sammie” Coy Smith of Florence, AL; son, Bill Smith of Lynchburg, VA; daughters, Emily (Matt) Wilbanks of Florence, AL and Belinda McKee of Myrtle Beach, SC; brother, Gary F. (Susie) Cosby, Sr. of Muscle Shoals, AL; grandchildren, Steven Wilbanks of Florence, AL; Jamie McKee of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Kyle McKee of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Amber Olsen for the excellent care she provided to Mrs. Smith. Also, the family expresses gratitude for the care provided by the staff of Helen Keller Hospital, Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and Southern Care New Beacon Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. John Methodist Church.
