Albert Charles Hausmann, 92, formerly of Florence and Madison, passed away in Huntsville, Alabama on December 9, 2024. Al was a former professor in the art department at UNA for many years, retiring in 1992.
Al was born on January 26, 1932 in Lakewood, Ohio to Arthur Karl and Alice Marie Carr Hausmann. He married Barbara Bunge on July 10, 1955. Mr. Hausmann was an art instructor at the University of Mississippi for two years before coming to the University of North Alabama in 1969.
While at UNA, Mr. Hausmann worked also as an art consultant for Alabama public schools and several non-profit organizations. His artistic contributions to the Shoals include the life-size bronze sculpture of
W. C. Handy in Wilson Park, the hand-carved walnut doors to the Temple B'nai Israel, bronze busts at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, stock certificate art for the Old Railroad Bridge Company, Inc., and the first poster for the annual W. C. Handy Music Festival in 1982.
Mr. Hausmann leaves behind his wife, Barbara Hausmann of Madison; his daughters, Teri (Neal) Jeter of Madison, Alabama, and Kimberly Thomas of Huntsville; his grandchildren, Stephen (Brittany) Jeter of Athens, Alabama; Lesley (Dave) Donoghue of Ireland; Chris (Amanda) Gates of Huntsville; and David (Amanda) Gates of Woodville, Alabama; his great-grandchildren Andrew, Alice, and Austin Jeter of Athens, Alabama; Riley and Payton Gates of Huntsville; Will and Eva Gates of Woodville, Alabama, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Rob, his grandson Adam Jeter, and his brother and sister-in-law Herb and Bernie Hausmann.
In accordance with Mr. Hausmann's wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. Donations may be made to the Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts or the Tennessee Valley Art Association.
