Debra Annette Barnes Chapin, 59, of Florence, passed away March 12, 2024.
Debra spent her life caring for others. She was a dedicated mom, grandmother, daughter and sister, devoted teacher, and loyal friend. Debra was a Christian whose unwavering faith guided her throughout her life. She was a member at Cloverdale and Hendrix Chapel Churches of Christ. Her kind, generous and loving nature towards all people contributes to the immeasurable legacy she leaves behind.
For decades, Debra served the community through her work with children across area nurseries, pre-schools, and beyond. She loved her students at Play World, Little Angel, and Underwood Pre-K. Affectionately known as Mama Debra, she impacted the lives of hundreds of children and families with her love and care.
Debra’s selflessness and heart for service lives on her children who, in lieu of flowers, ask for contributions to the Debra Chapin Memorial Account where donations will be collected to fund the work of local daycare programs, pre-schools, and pre-k programs that were an integral part of Debra’s life’s work.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 12-2 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Wayne Wood and Mark Sain officiating. Burial will follow in Cloverdale Church of Christ Cemetery.
Ms. Debra was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Garry Barnes; and a daughter, Desiree Hope Chapin.
She is survived by her mother, Linda Barnes of Florence; daughter, Heather Chapin Plaxco (Mitchell) of Huntsville; sons, Christopher Chapin of Madison, Corey Chapin (Allie) of Florence, and Clay Chapin (Molly) of Rogersville; sister, Sondra Barnes of Hayden, AL; grandchildren, Della and Everett Chapin of Madison, Collins Grace Chapin of Florence, and Judson Chapin of Rogersville; mother-in-law, Sylvia Chapin of Florence; best friend, Dena McClure of Florence; and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Keith McClure, Steve Fleming, Mitchell Plaxco, Christopher Chapin, Corey Chapin and Clay Chapin.
