Willabeth "Pat" Thompson

Willabeth “Pat” Thompson, 88, of Florence, died on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Pat grew up in Gadsden, AL. She was a graduate of Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo), received a master’s degree in religious education from the Carver School of Missions and Social Work in Louisville, KY, and a master’s degree in social work from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. She worked in a number of social agencies, retiring from the Riverbend Center for Mental Health.   Pat was a long-time member of Woodmont Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for almost thirty years. She wrote numerous articles and program materials for the Woman’s Missionary Union which is an Auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention, including a project guide, MISSION ACTION: AGING, and a study book, SPECIAL SKILLS IN MISSION ACTION. She later became a member of First United Methodist Church where she was an active member, teaching Sunday School, leading small groups, and developing the Careline, a congregation care program.

Visitation will be at Greenview Funeral Home on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 12:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m.  The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dick Waggener and Rev. Robert Sparkman officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.

Pat, as she was known by her friends, was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey and Viola Thompson; sister, Annie Ruth Akins; and a brother, Lamar Thompson.

She is survived by a beloved sister-in-law, Shirley Thompson of Huntsville; nephews, Philip Thompson of Auburn, AL and Johnie Roland Akins (Libby) of Athens, TN; niece, Lou Anne Albritton (Bill) of Camden, AL; two great-nephews, five great-nieces and one great-great-nephew.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or to Woodmont Baptist Church both of Florence.
