Opal Robertson Medley

Opal Robertson Medley, age 83, of Florence, Alabama, passed away October 7, 2014 after a sudden illness.  Mrs. Medley was a resident of Lauderdale County and a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Reba Robertson, her husband, Don Medley, daughter, Rhonda Hayes, son-in-law, Terry Hayes and sister, Louise Stutts.  Survivors include her sons Jimmy Medley(Donna), Randy Medley(Cheryl), Keith Medley(Carole), daughters Linda Quillen (James), Donna Gail Hayes, son-in-law Danny Hayes, sisters Josephine Canerday, Ruby Hamner, Alma Butler and brother-in-law Horace Stutts, all of Florence, Alabama. Grandchildren include Heather Medley McDaniel, Joe Quillen, Jay Quillen, Sabrina Hayes Davis, Ashley Hayes Bunch, Justin Hayes, Amy Medley Pope, Lee Medley, Rob Hayes, Jessica Hayes and John Medley.  Further survivors include 16 great grandchildren and 9 nieces and nephews.

In 1947 Mrs. Medley was married and out of school at age 16, bearing her 6th child by age 29.  In 1960 she began a retail sales career with the Tom Rogers family wherein she served in virtually every department and concluded her last 25 years as department manager of the Rogers Department Southgate Mall store.  While her love for the Rogers family, the many young employees she mentored and lifelong colleagues was apparent, her devotion to her six children was ever so present.  It was not unusual for her entire paycheck to be applied to clothes and shoes for her family.  As a quintessential matriarch she cherished the serenity of living only a “garden spot” from her sister, Alma, two sons and one daughter, yet fussed that her other three children didn’t live closer.  Opal, as she was called by her children and “Mom-Mom”, as she was called by her grandchildren, will be remembered for living a life of remarkable true grit, graciousness, love of family and most of all, faithfulness to God.

Pallbearers include grandsons Jay Quillen, Joe Quillen, Justin Hayes, Lee Medley, Rob Hayes and John Medley.  Honorary Pallbearers include great grandsons Taylor, Chandler, and Evan McDaniel, Lane Quillen, Will Davis, Jackson Bunch, and Sam Medley.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 6:00-9:00 at Greenview Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11:00 a. m. at Mt. Zion Church of Christ with burial to follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.  Friends may call at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Bro. Sonny Owens, Bro. Stan Dean, Bro. Robert Huffaker, and Bro. Jerry Campbell.
