Maxine Breedlove Cox was surrounded by loved ones when she died peacefully in her home on
Sunday, July 26, 2015. Maxine was born January 16, 1930 in Coffeeville, Mississippi. She
attended Delta State Teachers College and The University of Mississippi until she left during
her senior year to marry Jessie Lynn Cox of Water Valley, Mississippi, with whom she would
share 61 years of marriage. They married on January 29, 1950, and moved to Memphis,
Tennessee where she was employed by Lewis Supply Company. Jessie was transferred to
Florence, Alabama in 1953 and the two of them made their home there together until Jessie’s
death in 2011. In Florence, Maxine worked for the Dixie Supply Company until her first child
was born and she decided to become a stay‐at‐home wife and mother.
Maxine’s family brought her great joy and she loved spending time with her children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren making memories while fishing together, quacking for
ducks to come for a visit, playing paper dolls and board games, eating monkey bread or
sharing her love of sewing beautiful clothing and cross stitching. She loved hummingbirds,
beautiful flowers, dancing with her grandchildren in the kitchen to Boots Randolph and
listening to “Tie a yellow ribbon round that ole oak tree,” her favorite song. Maxine spent her
life building connections with the people she loved whether it was through sending long
letters, road trips to Mississippi or eating her legendary biscuits during Sunday lunch every
week after church. She was amazing in every way and will be missed, terribly.
Maxine was a charter member of Woodmont Baptist Church, where she held many important
positions. She was also a past member of the Kennedy Douglas Art Center and the Salvation
Army Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents, Christel Breedlove and Maifred
Upchurch Breedlove, her loving husband of 61 years, Jessie Lynn Cox, and her son in law Henry
Cooper (Hank) Standard, III.
She is survived by daughter Sandra Cox Johnson and husband Mike, son Robert Lynn Cox
(Bob) and wife Beth, daughter Teresa Cox Standard and sweetheart Bobby Frank, two
Granddaughters, Lindsey Johnson Roebuck and husband Butch and Christie Johnson Penney
