Martha "Gradene" (Butler) Gilbert

Martha “Gradene” Butler Gilbert was born November 10, 1922, and died April 28, 2017, at the age of 94. She was a lifetime member of Northwood United Methodist Church. She was an educator in Lauderdale County for many years, having taught at Lexington and Brooks Elementary.

Visitation will be at Greenview Funeral Home from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 01, 2017. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. in Greenview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Grady and Vera Marks Butler; husband, Julius Gilbert; son, Barry F. Gilbert and brother, Bill Butler.

She is survived by daughters, Gail Hite of Florence, AL, Virginia “Ginny” Curtis (Don) of Greenhill, AL., Julie (Dewey) Knudson of Portsmouth, VA. and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Gilbert of Florence, AL.; surviving grandchildren include, Sid Hite III (Linda) of Atlanta, GA, Kevin (Elzeline) Hite of Radford, VA, Brian (Ruthie) Hite of Columbus, GA, Michele Curtis of Greenhill, AL. and Kristin (Alan) Storie of Greenhill, AL.; great-grandchildren include, Forrest Hite, Abigail (Paul) Orr, Caleb and Liza Storie, Jesse Curtis and Dennis (Melissa) Garrard; two step great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Serving as active pallbearers will be, Caleb Storie, Jesse Curtis, Dewey Knudson, Forrest Hite,   Alan Storie, and Dennis Garrard.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Sid Hite III, Kevin Hite, Brian Hite, Abigail Orr, and Liza Storie.

The family extends a special thank you to the dedicated Hospice of the Shoals nurses, Vicki and Cynthia, Michelle, Debbie, and Lisa who made her days brighter by treating her like a queen.

A very special thank you goes to all her dedicated caregivers, Sandy, Heather, Teena, Jessica, Carol, Brandi, Deborah, Cyndy, and Michele who loved her and took care of her like she was their mother.

Mrs. Gilbert was truly a genteel Southern lady, who loved to travel, and will be missed by many.
