George Thomas (Tommy) Jones, 75, died Monday, September 4, 2017, at his home surrounded by family and friends. Visitation will be Monday, September 11, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Greenview Memorial Funeral Home, Florence, Alabama, with graveside service at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Baptist Church, Florence, Alabama.
Mr. Jones was a lifelong resident of Lauderdale County. He graduated from Central High School where he was a three year letterman in three sports, earning All State recognition and state record for scoring 19 touchdowns in one season. He attended Boys State and was elected Agricultural Commissioner. After graduation, he attended the University of North Alabama where he received his degree in biology and chemistry.
After college, he was hired as a research chemist at the Tennessee Valley Authority Research and Development Center. During his employment of 38 years, he developed many experimental fertilizers, even having some sent up in the space shuttle. After retirement, he returned to the family farm full time where he began his Angus cattle production. He continued to be active in farming until shortly before his death.
Survivors include his loving wife of almost 52 years, Patricia Mullins Jones; his daughter, Julie Braziel (Chuck), Florence; his son, George Thomas Jones, Jr. (Vicki), Florence; his granddaughter, Anabel Braziel, who he loved to call Bellie; and his brother-in-law, William H. Mullins, III (Janis), Birmingham.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Vernon Jones and Dorothy Mitchell Jones.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Braziel, Glen Jones, Keith Jones, Rod Stevenson, Billy Heupel, Adam Grott, Jim Spencer, and Greg Crenshaw.
